Skin Allergy Testing

Skin Allergy Testing

This type of testing is the most common and is relatively painless. A very small amount of certain allergens are put into your skin by making a small indentation or “prick” on the surface of your skin. You don’t have to wait long to find out what is triggering your allergies. Reactions occur within about 20 minutes. You generally won’t have any other symptoms besides the small hives where the tests were done, which go away within 30 minutes. If your prick skin tests are negative but your physician still suspects you might have allergies, more sensitive “intradermal” tests may be used in which a small amount of allergen is injected within the skin.

Spirometry is a test used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale. Spirometry is used to evaluate a broad range of lung diseases. Pulmonary function tests are done to:

  • Diagnose certain types of lung disease (such as asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema)
  • Find the cause of shortness of breath
  • Measure whether exposure to chemicals at work affects lung function
  • Check lung function before someone has surgery

Allergen immunotherapy is also known as allergy shots. It is a form of treatment that is highly successful at decreasing sensitivity to substances called allergens. Allergens are the substances that trigger allergy symptoms when someone is exposed to them. Immunotherapy has been shown to prevent the development of new allergies and can prevent the progression of the allergic disease from allergic rhinitis to asthma in children.

we made them all happy

  • VAAAC has provided quality and effective treatment for my allergies for the past six or seven years. Dr. Vilseck and everyone in the office have provided detailed explanations and personal assistance when needed with genuine care and concern. Such personal attention is refreshing and greatly appreciated.

  • I am 73 and have had allergies most of my life and just recently (3 years ago), I started seeing Dr. Vilseck and his staff.  I normally come 1/week and get my shots and see Dr. Vilseck on a scheduled session to see how I am doing.  I am very appreciative of the service and especially the personal touch that he and his staff have.

    Verlan Patient
  • After a bad reaction to a wasp sting,my primary physician sent me to Dr.Vilseck. A few visits and many tests, along with detailed examinations made me aware of a few other allergies and airway issues that we needed to address. If I had not followed Dr.Vilseck's advice...I possibly would not me here today. A short while after starting my visits with Dr. Vilseck I was bitten again by a wasp and had a terrible reaction, and through using his advice I was able to get to a hospital in time for necessary treatment. The Emergency Room Doctor told me that without proper procedures, I probably would have died before getting to the ER. Slim chance you have catching me without an EpiPen these days!
